Importance of Shadows

Keep it interesting

Shadows help tell a story.  They can be harsh, soft, flat or help mix warm inside lighting with cooler outside daylight.  The image upper left allows for soft shadows that highlight interior lighting groups....the windows, the lamp and the ceiling directional spots.  Even the fire in the fireplace adds a warmth to the room and will have the online viewer fingering longer on your listing photos and invite a showing.  Shadows can help tell a story to your viewer as they do in the upper right image.  We don't see the source but we can see the distinct shadow lines of several windows.  This fuels the viewers imagination and has them views wanting more.

Mix it up

Upper left we see the mix of warm interior lighting and the bluer exterior light coming in through front porch windows.  Upper right shows light being produced from multiple sources as well.  The harsh shadows on the entry tiled floor indicate light from the front windows, front entry, reflections from front light being shown onto the double french doors and the warmth of the overhead fixture.  The photographer needs to assess these possibilities of how shadows help present your home before the photos are taken.
